Did you play with LEGO as a kid?
I'm Sopheap Hok, a full stack developer at Rebel.com. And I really like LEGO.
But what does this have to do with hosting and the cloud? Let's start at the beginning.
Rebel has been selling domain names and web hosting products since 2006. This was a very different time - emo was a religion, tips were frosted and Pluto’s planet status was revoked. It was different for Rebel, too. Back then, we had all of our servers on-premise - which was a nightmare. We had roughly 200 heavy duty servers with dedicated air conditioning in an effort to prevent over-heating. We had backup generators in case the power went out. We even went as far as buying battery packs to ensure we still had enough juice for the crucial few seconds that the power switched from the mainline to the generator. And the electricity bill was ridiculous.
In short, it was an old school setup that was a nightmare to maintain.
So the decision was made to move to the cloud; That meant migrating all of our servers into Amazon’s datacenters. We didn’t know it then, but that was the best decision we would make.
Fast forward to today, and we are in a much happier place. Our Full Control Hosting offers our customers regional-based hosting, with servers located in 12 cities around the world. If you want to host your personal "I heart Beyoncé" website in Singapore, no problem. Click one button. It's done. That’s how easy it is being in the cloud.
One of the coolest things I’ve seen is infrastructure as code. Amazon’s CloudFormation allows us to maintain a script that will provision all the infrastructure resources in your cloud environment. This helps with our disaster recovery, in that as long as we have this script we can rebuild our infrastructure from scratch. This also allows us to experiment with different stacks. It’s like LEGO: You can build it up, play with it, tear it down and do it all over again.
Being in the cloud, everything is on demand and you are only charged for what you use.
Rebel’s journey through the cloud has been a game-changer. We are now future-proof.
